Already spend a lot of money on our new PC and don’t have the money to buy application and yoyu don’t want to deal with ads-ware. Not a problem below are my pick of free applications which are both good and doesn’t cost you anything.
- Internet Browsing: This is a no brainier with Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome are all free. Here are my advice, if your new PC happen to be a Netbook (laptop which cost around $300) you will be better off using IE or Chrome instead of Firefox. Firefox have a well know CPU utilization problem which use up way too many memory and CPU bandwidth.
- Media Viewing: Go with either VLC or Media Player Classic. Unfortunately you will still need to pay money for a commercial product like PowereDVD if you want to watch Bluray movie on your new machine.
- Zip File: Just download 7-Zip, it is free and it handles most compression format you will encounter in the wild.
- Office Suite: Don’t want to pay big $ for Office? Try OpenOffice.org.
- Anti-virus suite: Microsoft Security Essentials is actually very good and is completely free. Avast! is another good choice in case you don’t trust Microsoft. Don’t forget Spybot Search & Destroy one of the best spyware removal tool.
- System Maintenance: Don’t want to pay yearly free to use the Norton Suite? No problem. CCleaner is an excellent system clean up tool;JkDefrag or Defraggler are the best hard disk defrag tool out in the field or you can use . Revo Uninstaller will let you remove all those unwanted program from your PC.
- Virtual PC: Don’t have the money needed to get Win7 Ultimate or to buy a copy of VMWARE Workstation? Use Virtual Box instead. It is not as powerful as VMWARE workstation but it is free.
- Data Encryption: TrueCrypt is your best choice, it is fast and free.
- Data Backup: Can’t afford to but the latest Nero? Try ImgBurn instead. You may also want to look at HandBrake for some DVD ripping.
- Audio Editing: Want to mix our own song or create you own ringtone but can’t afford the the big $$$? Audacity is your best bet.
